Minister calls for emergency fire protection measures

A series of investigations on the cause of fires across Greece recently have led to the conclusion that half of the cases that have been solved so far involved arson, Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias said on Tuesday following an emergency meeting at the Greek fire department.

The minister announced that as part of emergency fire protection measures vehicles and pedestrians would be banned from entering parks and woodlands in urban areas, from dusk to dawn, and possibly during the day if that was deemed necessary.

Dendias said that Greek police patrols in tandem with fire brigade motorycle patrols were making their own contribution in terms of fire protection. He also urged citizens to be vigilant and report fires to the department.
