Talat suggests energy issues could lead Turkey to invade Cyprus
Former Turkish-Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat on Wednesday did not rule out the prospect of a new Turkish military invasion of Cyprus triggered by the discovery of hydrocarbon reserves within the island’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
“Politically, this is of course a possibility,” Talat told Simerini newspaper in an interview.
Negotiations between Nicosia and Noble-Delek for a natural gas liquefaction terminal to be built on the island’s southern coast are expected to wrap up by December.
