Amazonian fish turns up in Lake Kastoria

A fish found in Lake Kastoria earlier this week is native to the Amazon and was most probably released by someone who had been keeping it in an aquarium, regional officials said on Thursday.

The fish, which belongs to the Ancistrus family, is brown with yellow flecks and 26 centimeters long.

It has been removed from Lake Kastoria, according to a representative of the regional authority’s fishery department who warned against releasing exotic fish in Greek waters.

“They can alter the marine ecosystem,” Pavlos Filos said.
