Traffic police on standby for exodus of holidaymakers

Traffic police are to be out in force on the country’s roads from Friday as thousands of Greeks are expected to flee Athens and other cities for their summer vacations ahead of the August 15 public holiday.

Port authority officials will also be busy as a large number of holiday-makers will be traveling by ferry to various islands.

Athens International Airport is expected to be busier than this time last year with more scheduled flights as Greeks join a record number of tourists visiting popular summer holiday destinations.

There is increased interest in travel by train too with the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE) planning to increase by between 10 and 12 percent the number of daily national routes from next week, according to OSE officials.
