Three skeletons found by hiker on Gavdos

A coroner sailed to the tiny island of Gavdos, south of Crete, on Friday to examine three skeletons that were found by a hiker.

A doctor walking on the island found the remains, which became visible due to a rockfall.

Hania coroner Stamatis Belivanis said an initial inspection suggested the remains belonged to people who had died between 60 and 70 years ago.

The skeletons will be sent to a special laboratory in Athens for further examination.

Gavdos is Greece’s southernmost island and was used as a detention camp for exiled communists in the 1930s.
