Two women arrested following discovery of dead baby

A 20-year-old woman and her 44-year-old mother were arrested on Tuesday by police officers from Pyrgos in the Peloponnese on suspicion of dumping a newly born baby in a landfill used by the municipality of Andravida-Kyllini.

Tests on the dead child revealed that it had not been stillborn and that it was probably two days old when it was abandoned in the dump, where it died and was found by scavengers.

The child weighed 2.8 kilos and was about 50 centimeters long, the postmortem revealed.

The 20-year-old is thought to be the baby’s mother and the 44-year-old its grandmother.

Their identities were not made public.
