Burglars set fire to pensioner in bid to find cash

A 78-year-old pensioner was in critical condition at a hospital in Corinth, west of Athens, on Monday after burglars set him alight, police said.

According to the account given to police by the elderly victim, who has mobility problems, four men burst into his home in Asprokambos, near Corinth, and doused him with petrol when he refused to tell them where he kept his cash.

One of the robbers then set him alight, forcing him to speak, before extinguishing the fire by throwing a blanket over the 78-year-old, police said.

The burglars fled with an estimated 4,000 euros while the elderly man remained hospitalized with serious injuries.
