Arcturos bear sanctury rejects Golden Dawn donation after outcry
The Arcturos bear sanctuary, which had recently made an appeal for donations to stave off closure, has said it will refuse 5,000 euros offered by far right Golden Dawn.
Arcturos reacted to an outcry after the extremist party advertised the fact that it had donated the money and that its leader, Nikos Michaloliakos, was an animal lover.
“Arcturos recognizes that it was a mistake to accept this donation and for this reason has decided to turn the gift down and is returning the money to the party in question,” the sanctuary said in a statement.
The sanctuary in Nymfaio was created 21 years ago to end the practice of dancing bears but has since expanded its activities to protect flora and other animals.
