Large firefighting effort to douse blaze on Cephalonia

A large firefighting effort was under way on Thursday to extinguish a blaze that broke out on the Ionian island of Cephalonia.

Fourteen firefighters were dispatched to fight the blaze from the ground while three water-dropping aircraft aided the effort from the air.

The blaze, which broke out in the area of Karouza, was not threatening residential areas, according to the island’s mayor Alexandros Parisis who told Skai radio there were hopes it would be doused by the early afternoon.

Forest fires that broke out on Wednesday on the southern Aegean island of Rhodes had been brought under partial control by lunchtime on Wednesday, local reports said.
