City Hall asks for help with revamp of historic center

An initiative by City Hall that aims to revamp major streets in the capital’s historic center by removing graffiti from the facades of buildings was officially launched on Thursday with municipal authorities appealing for help from volunteers, particularly from citizens’ groups.

“Clearly such an initiative is successful when it is embraced by groups of citizens but also by residents and entrepreneurs as it is essentially they who can help keep the roads in a good condition,” said Amalia Zepou, City Hall’s chief point of contact with citizens’initiatives. Zepou said that many Athenians already had expressed an interest in volunteering to help with the campaign.

The project started unofficially last month with a revamp of the historic building which accommodates the Varvakeio meat market on Athinas Street. Unfortunately the building’s facade has since been vandalized with fresh graffiti.
