Defense officials to hold crisis talks on Syria
Defense Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos is on Friday to hold an emergency summit to discuss Greece’s possible support role in the event of a US hit on Syria, sources said, and to prepare for the possibility of unexpected developments such as reprisals.
Avramopoulos and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos discussed the issue of Syria on Thursday and reportedly reaffirmed Greece’s resolve to support the United States and its allies in a military intervention in Syria by allowing use of its military bases and air and sea access.
The risk of so-called “asymmetric threats” – or possible reprisals against Greece for supporting its Western allies – was also discussed, according to sources.
