Overprescribing doctors list is handed to SDOE
Acting on a pledge to crack down on doctors who abuse pharmaceutical prescriptions, a practice which is estimated to cost the state up to 1 billion euros a year, Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis has provided Greece’s financial crimes squad with the names of medics suspected of malpractice.
A list of doctors suspected of overprescribing drugs to their patients in June was given to SDOE chief Stelios Stasinopoulos yesterday. Wrongdoers will face disciplinary action, Georgiadis said.
A general practitioner in Macedonia, northern Greece, was recently found to have drawn up 4,388 prescriptions in just one month – between 150 and 200 a day.
