POE-OTA unionists in dock over cutbacks protests

The 35 members of the general council of the municipal workers’ union (POE-OTA) face trial on Tuesday in connection with extended strike action carried out by unionists in October 2011 to protest cutbacks imposed by the government in response to demands by the country’s troika of international lenders.

POE-OTA has called on its members to join a four-hour walkout from 11 a.m. on Tuesday to underline their opposition to the legal action which the Central Union of Municipalities and Communities of Greece (KEDE) decried as “the criminalization of the trade union movement.”

Protesters are planning to rally outside the capital’s Evelpidon court complex during the walkout.
