Ore that spilled from Hellas Gold truck was not toxic, claims firm

Hellas Gold, which manages the contentious Skouries gold mine in Halkidiki, has denied there were any toxic leaks when one of its trucks was involved in an accident on Thursday.

The truck, carrying ore concentrate, stopped for a tyre change in Volvi but as the work was being carried out, its doors opened and some of the contents poured out.

The local authority and the company were notified. Hellas Gold sent a team to clean up the spill.

Locals claimed the ore contained arsenic, which is often used in gold mining. The company denied there were any toxic substances in the ore that spilled out of the truck.
