Health vouchers being snapped up by uninsured
More than 1,000 health vouchers, which give social security cover to people who don’t normally qualify for it, have been handed out every day since the program was launched on September 2, Kathimerini has learned.
The government has set aside 46 million euros to fund the scheme, which was set up to address the problem of a growing number of Greeks losing their public healthcare cover after becoming unemployed. The program aims to provide up to 230,000 applicants with vouchers that will allow them to see doctors without charge.
Up to Friday morning, more than 13,000 vouchers had been issued after applications were received online at www.healthvoucher.gr. The applicants came from around 9,000 families, more than a third of whom live in Attica. Among those receiving the voucher since the scheme started are 149 pregnant women.
