Young mother accused of causing her baby’s death

A 24-year-old new mother is being accused by authorities in Pyrgos in the Peloponnese of causing the death of her two-day-old baby after abandoning it for several hours on Tuesday morning.

The young mother was in a maternity ward at the Pyrgos general hospital where she had given birth to the infant. She allegedly fed her baby before deciding to leave the hospital to run errands without informing staff that the infant was unattended.

The baby was found dead by a midwife doing rounds of the wards and is believed to have died of aspiration.

The 24-year-old was arrested by police when she returned to the hospital several hours later. She is being accused of reckless abandonment, which led to the baby’s death.
