Main Greek healthcare provider over budget, owes 500 mln

Greece’s main healthcare provider, the National Organization for Healthcare Provision (EOPYY), is likely to miss its spending target for the year by 470 million euros, Kathimerini understands.

The overspend is mainly due to a failure to meet the budgeted amounts for diganostic tests, physiotherapy and medical treatment.

EOPYY also owes some 500 million euros to its suppliers, which include pharmacies.

The organization has already paid out some 850 million euros this year to take care of debts dating back to the beginning of 2012.

The state of EOPYY’s finances is likely to be discussed in the coming week by Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis and visiting officials from the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund.
