Strike ahead at private schools
Teachers at state schools have stopped their protests against the government’s mobility scheme, for now, but educators at private schools decided on Thursday to go on strike on October 15 over a government directive that extends their working hours.
The teachers’ union, OIELE, is protesting a change that allows their employers to ask them to work longer and more flexible hours.
The union says that this will increase private schools’ profits by 20 million euros and lead to many teachers losing their jobs.
The Council of State is due to hear an appeal by OIELE against the new regulations on October 17.
Strikes by teachers at private schools are rare in Greece.
