Cyprus president meets with US VP in Washington

Nicosia and Washington have agreed that talks to unify the divided island need a new impetus, reports said on Saturday.

After a meeting with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades in the White House on Friday, US Vice President Joe Biden stressed that he remains committed to a reunited Cyprus as a bi-zonal and bi-communal federation.

Negotiations to reunite the island, divided since 1974, are expected to resume next month after an 18-month lull.

Friday’s meeting also focused on energy issues as well as cooperation between Cyprus, Greece and Israel – all of which are US allies in the region.

Reports in the Cypriot media said Biden acknowledged Nicosia’s sovereign right to exploit any natural resources found within the contours of its exclusive economic zone.
