Parliament examines whether to stop wages for Golden Dawn suspects
Parliamentary speaker Evangelos Meimarakis spoke with representatives of parliamentary parties, apart from Golden Dawn, on Monday to examine the possibility of stopping the neofascist party’s deputies from receiving salaries.
Golden leader Nikos Michaloliakos and five of his MPs were placed in custody over the weekend but they will retain their role as lawmakers until they are tried. If convicted, they will lose their seats in Parliament.
However, Meimarakis has sought advice from constitutional experts on whether their parliamentary benefits, including a generous salary, could be stopped earlier.
The issue is due to be discussed by MPs in a plenary session next year.
