Thessaloniki policeman suspended after illegal weapons search
A 41-year-old sergeant with the Thessaloniki police in northern Greece was arrested on Tuesday after an internal affairs investigations revealed a cache of illegal weapons and ammunition in his and his brother’s homes.
The unnamed officer was being investigated following allegations that he is a supporter of Golden Dawn, as part of an effort to eradicate links between the extreme far-right party and the police.
A search on his and his brother’s homes and cars uncovered a collection of unregistered weapons and ammunition, which the police sergeant is said to have purchased online. Police also found 106,800 euros during the search.
The police officer has been suspended from duty as an investigation into his activities is under way, while his brother, aged 44, has also been arrested on charges of illegal arms possession.
