Police raid Fylis landfill to clear out scrap collectors
Police responded on Friday to a request by Attica Governor Yiannis Sgouros to clear out dozens of people looking for scrap metal and other valuables at the capital’s biggest landfill in Fyli, northwestern Athens, by raiding the dump and removing trespassers.
Sgouros on Thursday had said that unless the trespassers were cleared from the property the dump cannot function as the use of heavy machinery poses a risk to their safety.
The landfill, which processes the vast majority of the capital’s waste as well as that from other parts of the country, was closed for a third day on Friday.
