Rectors face deadline on Wednesday for transfers

University rectors have until Wednesday to provide the Education Ministry with a list of the names of their administrative staff so the transfer of more than 1,300 employees can take place, otherwise they could be charged with breach of duty.

The government wants to place 1,340 university administrative staff in its civil service mobility scheme, which must contain 12,500 public sector workers in the next few days for Greece to receive its next loan tranche of 1 billion euros.

The rectors argue that their institutions will not be able to function without these employees.

With the clock ticking toward the troika deadline, the ministry has given rectors until Wednesday to cooperate in the process.

The ministry says that many of the employees, who will be moved from eight universities, will be placed in other institutions.

It says there are 182 empty places at other universities and 464 at technical colleges.
