UNESCO addresses letter to British gov’t regarding Parthenon Marbles return
World heritage organization UNESCO has addressed a letter to the British government regarding the return of the Parthenon Marbles.
The move followed a meeting between Greek Culture Minister Panos Panayiotopoulos and UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova last July during which the Greek minister asked the UNESCO official to intervene and initiate a mediation process.
If the British side agrees to take part in the process, it would mark the first time that UNESCO would act as a mediator between countries facing a cultural dispute.
Meanwhile, the International Association for the Reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures was expected to hold a meeting for representatives of all its member organizations in Athens on Sunday.
