Police raid Roma settlement, arrest 18
Eighteen people arrested in a large-scale police operation in a Roma settlement in the Acharnon Municipality on Tuesday were expected to face a local prosecutor.
The crackdown came after a series of complaints filed by Mayor Soritis Douros regarding an increasing number of violations and rise in criminal activity in the area.
Besides citing drug trafficking and use as well as theft of private and public property, Douros had also referred to an apparent lack of cooperation on behalf of Greek police.
Police officers taking part in the operation on Tuesday checked 155 people and 125 vehicles, subsequently detaining 45 for questioning and eventually arresting 18. Five of those arrested were being sought by police on charges of drug trafficking and robberies.
