Aghios Panteleimonas playground reopening deferred for safety reasons

A decision to reopen a children’s playground in Aghios Panteleimonas, central Athens, was deferred on Thursday by a City of Athens council as the equipment is in need of renovation and the police’s assistance in guarding the site has to be secured.

The playground was closed in 2009 after Golden Dawn supporters began attacking migrants who visited the area. Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis said Thursday he intends to reopen the playground but that some work needs to be carried out first.

“The playground in Aghios Panteleimonas will operate again but such an intervention has to be sustainable and has to take into account suggestions from residents, the Church and other bodies,” he said.
