Patra police officer jailed for beating citizen

A Patra police officer was to be jailed after a misdemeanors court in the western port sentenced him to 12 months in jail on Thursday for causing grievous bodily harm to a citizen in 2009.

The citizen took legal action against the unnamed policeman in March 2009 after he was stopped by two plain clothes officers during a demonstration by Afghan immigrants who had been protesting the death of a compatriot.

The citizen claimed to have been taken to a local precinct officers and beaten.

The second policeman was also tried in the same case but was cleared by the court.
