Coast Guard to acquire hi-tech scanning units
The Coast Guard has signed a 3.2-million-euro deal with a Greek company ONEX to buy three US-made mobile scanning units to help monitor shipping containers when they are stacked at ports.
According to manufacturer American Science and Engineering, the Z Backscatter Van (ZBV) can scan objects that similar units cannot reach.
“Its photo-like imaging quickly and clearly reveals threats like explosives, drugs, currency and trade-fraud items such as alcohol and cigarettes – even in high-throughput environments like border crossings and security checkpoints,” the company claims on its website.
Speaking on TV earlier this week, Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras admitted that the purchase of mobile X-rays, which Greece wants mainly to tackle smuggling, had taken longer than the government wanted.
