Engineers checking safety of buildings on Crete after Saturday quake

Inspectors from the Infrastructure Ministry have been checking buildings in the Hania prefecture of Crete after the island was struck by a 6.4 Richter earthquake on Saturday.

Civil engineers have been in the area since Monday morning to check on buildings were damage from the tremor and strong aftershocks have been recorded. The structural safety of schools is in particular focus.

The Samaria Gorge, a popular tourist attraction, has been closed as a result of the quake. A decision on when it will open is due on Monday afternoon.
