Two more Golden Dawn suspects held over rapper death

A 32-year-old man alleged to have been in the same car as Golden Dawn supporter Giorgos Roupakias when the latter killed leftist rapper Pavlos Fyssas last month was remanded in custody on Monday.

The suspect had left his mobile phone and identity card in the vehicle, according to sources, but his lawyer argued that there were no witnesses placing him at the scene of the fatal stabbing. A magistrate decided that the man should be held on charges of being an accomplice to murder.

Shortly after the decision to remand him, the police issued a statement saying that the latter’s parents had been arrested after trying to smuggle two flares to him during a visit to his police cell.

Meanwhile a 36-year-old man suspected of involvement in the attack on Fyssas was also remanded. His cellphone records allegedly show that he spoke and exchanged messages on the night of the killing with Giorgos Patelis, the head of Golden Dawn’s cell in Nikaia, close to Amfiali where the stabbing took place. Roupakis, who admits to killing Fyssas but claims to have done so in self-defense, is to face a magistrate on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, as MPs prepare to debate lifting the immunity of GD lawmakers facing charges, and stopping state funding to the party, Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias said he would not respond to questions submitted by GD MPs while a judicial investigation into the party is under way.
