Tender for Votanikos mosque postponed
A government tender for the construction of an official mosque in Votanikos, near central Athens, has been postponed for October 24.
Reports said the procedure was postponed because of illness of the president of the tender evaluation committee.
That would be the fourth tender for the much-delayed 946,000-euro project.
Several firms have in the past expressed concerns about the popular opposition to the construction of a mosque in Athens, one of very few European capitals without an official place of worship for Muslims.
The far-right Golden Dawn party is opposed to the mosque’s construction but the project is also being fought by Bishop of Piraeus Seraphim and a residents’ group in Votanikos.
