GSEE calls 24-hour walkout against austerity for Nov 6

Greece’s private sector union GSEE on Wednesday called on members to join a 24-hour strike on November 6 to protest the government’s ongoing austerity drive.

The union said it was calling the action to protest “the dead-end and catastrophic” economic policies of the coalition government including a new unified property tax which protesters fear will work out to be higher than previous levies, despite the government’s reassurances to the contrary.

Unionists also fear fresh “horizontal cuts” to civil servants’ salaries and to pensions.

Earlier this week the national seamen’s union (PNO) said it planned to join the 24-hour walkout, a move that would lead to disruptions in passenger and cargo ferry schedules on the day.

It remained unclear whether the civil servants’ union would join the walkout.
