Judges to rule on fate of ex-FinMin Giorgos Papaconstantinou
A judge tasked with handling the case of former Finance Minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou, who allegedly tampered with the so-called Lagarde list of wealthy Greeks, has asked the Supreme Court’s judicial council to determine whether the charges faced by the ex-minister have expired under the statute of limitations.
Iosif Tsalaganidis asked the council to confirm that there are legal grounds for an indictment. In July, MPs voted to indict Papaconstantinou for breach of faith, violation of duty and doctoring a document. The fact that two general elections were held last summer could save Papaconstantinou as the Constitution dictates that offenses allegedly committed by ex-ministers expire if two parliaments have sat since the offense.
