Kammenos urges ND, PASOK MPs to overthrow government

Panos Kammenos, leader of the right-wing anti-bailout Independent Greeks party, on Thursday urged the deputies of the two coalition parties to vote against any new austerity measures.

“If they do not want the new measures to pass, they must overthrow the government,” Kammenos told Antenna TV of the New Democracy-PASOK power-sharing administration.

“The government’s reaction to the demands of the troika is the stuff of fairy tale. This policy will not save us. I urge them to overthrow the government now,” he said.

Kammenos also made an appeal to the voters of the far-right Golden Dawn party. Polls show that a big chunk of Golden Dawn supporters have turned their back on the ultranationalist party in the wake of recent developments.

“We do not want the Nazis of Golden Dawn; we want those who voted [for the party] as a protest,” he said adding that the aim was to build a broad anti-bailout front.

In a gesture to the left, Kammenos in the same interview also attacked the ND-backed “theory of the two extremes.” The credo, which basically draws parallels between far-right and left-wing violence, has been used by conservatives in a bid to discredit leftist SYRIZA opposition.

“Champions of the theory of the two extremes have no place in our party,” he said.
