Information being sought about abducted child

Authorities and children’s nonprofit organization The Smile of the Child were on Friday looking for the parents of a 4-year-old girl allegedly abducted in 2009 after they found her in a Roma camp in Farsala, central Greece.

DNA tests carried out on the Roma man and woman claiming to be the girl’s parents proved the child was not theirs. The pair were charged with abduction and giving false statements. The circumstances of the kidnapping are not clear.

However, police believe the Roma couple were involved in child trafficking. The woman registered two separate addresses, held two identification cards and had claimed to be the mother of 10 children, six of whom were purportedly born between 1993 and 1995.

Anyone with information is asked to call the European hotline for missing children on 116000, or to contact The Smile of the Child by phoning 210.760.9550 or sending an e-mail to [email protected].
