Former Thessaloniki mayor’s appeal hearing to take place on Wednesday

A five-judge appeals court in Thessaloniki is to decide on Wednesday whether to hear an appeal by the former mayor of the northern port city, Vassilis Papageorgopoulos, against a life sentence handed to him eight months ago on charges of embezzling some 18 million euros from municipal coffers.

The hearing had been scheduled to take place on Tuesday but a backlog of other cases put it back.

Michalis Lemousias, who served as Papageorgopoulos’s general secretary, and Panayiotis Saxonis, the ex-mayor’s treasurer, are also appealing jail terms of 15 and 10 years respectively handed down to them in connection with the same case.
