Roma group cleared of deception charges on Crete
A group of 137 Roma were cleared on Thursday of obtaining loans of up to 70,000 euros each on the proviso they left their encampment in Iraklio on Crete but then failing to do so.
The Roma denied they had received the money and their lawyer argued that his defendants were illiterate and were not aware of the loan terms they had agreed to.
The judge agreed with this argument, rejecting the prosecution’s claim that the Roma attempted to obtain the money through deception.
