Pay-and-display parking scheme back in force in Athens

The pay-and-display parking system returns to central Athens as of Tuesday. Motorists will have to purchase a scratch card allowing them to park in specially designed spots in the city center.

The system was suspended during the summer as a result of the government’s decision to disband the Municipal Police, which was in charge of supervising the scheme.

According to the City of Athens, checks will now be carried out by municipal employees wearing special badges and who are expected to staff a new municipal department responsible for overlooking public spaces.
