Conservative bishop elected head of Hellenic Red Cross
A conservative cleric that has in the past expressed his opposition to organ transplants has been elected head of the Greek branch of the Red Cross, Kathimerini understands.
Bishop Pavlos of Glyfada was on Thursday elected president of the troubled organization by members of the board.
The 13 board members of the Greek branch of the Red Cross resigned in September following pressure from the international agency. The Red Cross was concerned about the management of its Greek branch, including debts that the Athens-based branch had run up to the Geneva-based organization.
In a circular issued in June, Pavlos urged the faithful to protest against a 2011 organ transplant law.
“No society can be considered humane and christian that which has established the tragic dogma “it’s your life or mine,” the circular said.
