Scheme to make Thessaloniki’s seafront car free once a month

Thessaloniki is to begin a pilot scheme this week that will see its seafront Nikis Avenue being closed to traffic on the first Sunday of every month.

The road, which runs along the northern port city’s promenade, will be pedestrianized between noon and 8 p.m. this Sunday, which coincides with retail stores being open due to the launch of a new interim sales period that will run from November 1 to 9.

However, the municipality plans to stop cars from using Nikis Avenue on the first Sunday of December as well. The traffic police has given its approval for the measure. It remains to be seen whether the initiative will turn into something more permanent.
