Six seamen’s healthcare fund workers arrested for fraud

Six employees of the seamen’s healthcare fund were arrested on Friday for trying to defraud the organization of more than 1.1 million euros.

The suspects were caught after they allegedly tried to enlist the owner of a clinic that worked with the fund in their scam. The clinic had been paid 1,153,000 euros for services it had provided to seamen insured with the fund and the six suspects allegedly told the owner that they could make the same payment to him a second time without it being recorded.

According to the scam, the businessman would keep half of the embezzled money and the six suspects the other 50 percent. He informed police and the suspects were arrested as they accepted 205,000 euros in marked banknotes. Police arrested the fund president’s personal assistant, her husband, the chief treasurer and three employees.
