Warning of fire hazard

The fire brigade yesterday appealed to the public to help prevent forest fires by not dropping lit cigarette butts and by not lighting fires in the open. High temperatures expected to last over the next few days and strong winds have considerably increased the fire hazard. The public is also warned against doing any work in the open that could produce sparks. This followed the first major fires of the season. Two firefighting aircraft and 15 vehicles helped extinguish a blaze that broke out yesterday morning in forest at Oreokastro, in Thessaloniki. It destroyed over a hectare of forest before it was put out. The fire brigade is on standby to guard against any rekindling. A blaze that destroyed two out of seven warehouses at a paper factory in Inofyta on the Athens-Lamia highway was finally brought under control Saturday morning by a large firefighting force. On Saturday, two other fires at Perani, on the island of Salamina, and on Friday in Megara were extinguished before they were able to cause major damage.
