Streets to close from Friday ahead of November 17 commemorations

Streets around the National Technical University of Athens (the NTUA or, formerly, Polytechnic) on Patission Street and the US Embassy will be gradually closed off to the public from Friday until Sunday, when events marking the 40th anniversary of a bloody student uprising are to reach their peak.

Traffic police have appealed to motorists to avoid Patission Street, Alexandras Avenue, Stadiou Street and Vassilissis Sofias Avenue if possible over the next few days.

Some 7,000 police officers are to be on duty from Friday to avoid any upheaval in the countdown to the annual march from the Polytechnic to the US Embassy on Sunday.
