Tatsopoulos threatens to quit SYRIZA in case of Independent Greeks alliance

Reacting to revived speculation about a possible cooperation between SYRIZA and Independent Greeks, MP Petros Tatsopoulos on Friday said he would leave the leftist opposition party if that were to occur.

“We are not automatons blindly following the party line,” Tatsopoulos told Skai. “That would mean that SYRIZA is on a whole different path than the one I had in mind when I decided to join the party,” the outspoken MP added.

Describing Independent Greeks as a “populist party with right-wing roots,” the SYRIZA MP said the two anti-bailout parties are divided by “huge differences on national as well as economic issues.”

Speculation about the two parties joining forces intensified this week after Independent Greeks’ MP Notis Marias suggested that the two political groups could allow candidates to run on the same ticket at next year’s local elections. Marias on Tuesday proposed that there be a formal discussion about this possibility.

A Pulse RC survey published Thursday put SYRIZA of Alexis Tsipras on 22 percent, slightly ahead of ruling New Democracy. Panos Kammenos’s party was on 4.5 percent.
