Greece-bashing not the way forward, says EU commissioner Oettinger

Germany’s European Union Energy Commissioner, Gunther Oettinger, has called for “Greece-bashing” to stop and for “populists” to ditch the idea that the eurozone can be broken up.

“Greece-bashing is the wrong way,” Oettinger said in a speech to members of the youth wing of Angela Merkel’s CDU party, which the Commissioner also belongs to.

Those who want to throw countries like Greece out of the euro, do not understand that global investors expect euro zone to show cohesion, warned Oettinger.

His comments came after the CDU’s Bavarian sister party, the CSU, proposed that the eurozone should be able to force members out and that key decisions regarding the European Union should be voted on in a referendum.
