Police dismantle racket accused of illegal dumping

Police have dismantled a racket accused of dumping dangerous waste in the area of Votanikos near central Athens.

During a raid on Wednesday, officers arrested three truck drivers, aged 40, 46 and 47, just as they were about to dispose of hazardous material in an empty lot. Police also arrested another 47-year-old who is believed to have let them use the site in exchange for a fee.

Experts found a wide range of potentially harmful materials including hospital, metallurgical and plastic waste.

The suspects are believed to have made tens of thousands of euros after dumping refuse on a daily basis for the past six months.
