New Thessaloniki homeless shelter to open next month
A homeless shelter to be funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation is to start operating in Thessaloniki next month when temperatures are expected to drop and hundreds of people sleeping on the street will be at greater risk.
The building will offer 74 beds and will operate from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. daily.
According to Arsis, a nongovernment organization that will be helping to run the shelter, the homeless problem in the northern port city is still manageable.
“Despite the economic crisis, the number of homeless has not yet increased significantly,” according to Arsis spokesman, Nikos Gavalas.
