Former boxer remanded over fatal beating outside Athens restaurant

A 39-year-old former boxer was remanded in custody on Tuesday after facing a magistrate over the fatal beating he administered last week to a 28-year-old man who had tried to claim his girlfriend’s unpaid wages from a restaurant where she had worked in Omonia, central Athens.

The 43-year-old restaurant manager was granted conditional release.

The 39-year-old, an ethnic Greek from Chechnya, denied that he intended to kill his victim and alleged that he was acting in self-defense.

The restaurant owner denied that the former boxer worked as a bouncer at the establishment.
