Volunteers wanted for a ‘dream’

Athens 2004 organizers are looking for 10,000 volunteers with artistic or sporting talents to consider performing before 70,000 spectators and a television audience of 4 billion people in the Olympics’ opening and closing ceremonies next year. «We are not looking for numbers but for people. For those personalities who have the enthusiasm and the zest to offer a little of their time so that 10,000 of us can work together and turn a dream into reality,» Dimitris Papaioannou, who is in charge of the artistic direction of the ceremonies, said yesterday. He is looking for more than 8,000 volunteer performers with training in dance, theater or music as well as athletes with specialties including track, gymnastics, yoga, aerobics, bodybuilding, cycling and the martial arts. Another 2,000 volunteers are needed to work as artistic and technical support staff. The deadline for applications is Sept. 15, 2003. Those interested may visit www.athens2004.com for details.
