Strong winds keep ferries at port as cold front expected to spread

Gale-force winds that swept Greece overnight and early on Tuesday kept ferry boats tied up at the ports of Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio in Attica, as well as the Rio-Antirro crossing in western Greece for several hours.

The routes cancelled were those to Aegina from Piraeus, to Andros, Tinos and Myconos from Rafina, and to Tzia from Lavrio, though port authorities did not rule out the possibility that further sailings will be called off amid forecasts that the weather will worsen over the course of the day.

The Attica fire service received more than 230 telephone calls in the early hours of Tuesday to remove fallen trees and branches, while at the Menidi train station a tree fell onto two parked cars.

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service warned that conditions will deteriorate further over the course of the day, hitting eastern and southern Greece hardest. It also said that it expected strong winds as high as 10 on the Beaufort scale in the northern and central Aegean.

The cold front that swept into Greece in the early hours of Tuesday brought snow to parts of Florina, Kastoria and Grevena in the north, while the temperature in Thessaloniki stood at 7 degrees Celsius.

Strong storms are forecast for Crete and the southern Peloponnese.
